Eco-Tourism

Nature has
showered her bounties on Tripura, popularly known as
the ‘daughter of the Eastern Hills’ on account of her
undulating hilly terrain and rich forest cover.
According to official statistics the state has over
60% of its total geographical area under forest cover,
out of which about 6% is under protected areas in form
of four wildlife sanctuaries.The
topography of the state dotted with wooded hills, lush
green valleys, rivers and lakes
and its demography,
with a sizable tribal population from as many as 19
communities of varied tradition and culture, presents
a plethora of thrust areas for operation and promotion
of eco-tourism in Tripura. The state with over seven
almost parallel hill ranges covered with forests of
varying density and equal measure of major rivers
crisscrossing the valleys between two adjacent hill
ranges dotted with tribal hamlets provides a perfect
landscape for tourists with different preferences and
tastes for the kind of recreation and enjoyment they
might ask for. Innumerable trekking routes exist
through the forests and traditionally and culturally
rich hamlets, which have potential to provide a deep
insight into the cultural and ecological diversity of
the state.
Broadly,
from eco-tourism points of view, the potential tourist
resources can be categorized into three: Natural
Resource based; Cultural and traditional Resource
based; and Architecture/heritage resource based. |
